Last Thursday Bill flew out to Richmond, VA to spend some time with James and Kristen. We already have plans to spend a long weekend with them at the end of June for Logan’s first birthday. But James had an off-duty assignment to work security at a tri-state Hooters Bikini Contest and asked if Bill would like to ride along. Natrually, he said yes. Apparently the contest wasn’t very fun… too many creepy old guys hanging around. They also spent a lot of time hanging out with James’ co-workers. Many tried to get Bill to apply to their department. Bill took a few pictures, most with his camera phone. I’ll post some when I get them from him. Logan is getting bigger every day and has much more personality than he did when we last saw him. He’s also starting to walk. James says he sometimes gets lazy and gives up on the whole walking thing. It must be really funny to watch. I’m really looking forward to our trip out there.
Sunday we added a new member to our family: an offset smoker. This is Bill’s birthday present from me… almost two months early. There is too much barbeque season between now and his birthday, we can’t waste it! Bill and Doug put the thing together and Monday night we had hickory smoked chicken and corn-on-the-cob. It was delicious. I picked up a few bags of different kinds of wood to try: apple wood, pecan, and cabernet (from the oak barrels that once stored cabernet wine). Between mesquite and hickory, probably the most common varieties, we much prefer hickory. It should be interesting to see the differences in taste with these new ones.
Later that evening, as we were snuggling on the couch, watching The Daily Show with Jon Stewart, I caught myself smelling Bill’s tshirt. And then Bill caught me and laughed at me. What could I say, it smelled like barbeque smoke! It’s such a comfort smell to me. It smells like family vacations when I was a kid. It smells like Girl Scout camp. It smells like family barbeques in the summer. It’s a great smell!
Although the plans aren’t set, we’re planning to fly to Las Vegas Friday evening to see Ocean’s Thirteen. (Bill and Louie’s idea, “we gotta see it in Vegas!”) Saturday morning Bill and I will fly to the Bay Area to spend the rest of the weekend. Should be interesting if we actually make it to Vegas.
