Bill was traveling all of last week: Denver on Monday, NewYork on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday in Fort Lauderdale, and Friday in San Jose. It had been a while since he’d been in the Bay Area, so we spent the weekend in Newark. This weekend also happened to be his birthday. Now, Bill doesn’t like birthday parties for himself. He doesn’t like anyone to advertise or make a big deal out of his birthday. I’ve done my best to respect this… within reason. His mom just lies to him and tells him it’s just dinner with a couple of people… “It’s just what we like to do on the weekends.” Saturday afternoon we had a BBQ with Bill’s parents and about a dozen of his aunts, uncles, cousins and Laikwan’s friends. Bill and I were expecting a small dinner with maybe one or two aunts. Nope, she fooled us all. We BBQed beef, chicken and lamb. It was all tasty and it was nice to see some peple we hadn’t seen in a long while. It also gave us an opportunity to hand out a few wedding invitations. (For the rest of you, they’ll be in the mail sometime this week.)
Here are the two cakes that we had. They’re both yummy white sponge cake with cream and fruit filling. The round cake was almost all cream filling. I think each piece was around three pounds!
Bill and his mom. Bill’s wearing the t-shirt I got him for his birthday. It’s a pic of Chuck Norris with an uzi and it says, “You’re starting to irritate me. It’s time to die.” Highly appropriate for the birthday party, don’t you think? I’m pretty sure James would like that shirt too, eh?
Here Bill is cutting the cake as everyone is singing. I really wish I’d switched to video.
This is Bill’s cousin’s daughter with her great aunt and uncle. She’s adorable and very shy. She’d be a perfect flower girl for us if she was willing to do it. Laikwan has asked her a couple of times and every time she gets a firm no.
It was a nice party and I think Bill had a good time… although he might not admit it.
