Crazy story!

My coworker Gus was out sick yesterday. This morning he came in and showed us a 1″x 1/4″ shard of clear glass in a plastic bag. It was lodged in his esophagus! Wow! He then proceeded to tell us all about his sick day…
Last week he was feeling like crap with no appetite. Because of his lack of appetite he wasn’t eating, lowering his blood sugar, and causing a severe headache. Over the weekend, no amount of ibuprofen would get rid of his headache so he went to see a doctor. After a thorough exam and blood work, they couldn’t figure out what was wrong. The culprit was discovered in an x-ray, when radiologist thought there might be a piece of plastic stuck in his esophagus. They gave Gus a sedative and put a tube down his throat with suction. Even though he was pretty out of it, he said he was fully aware of the noises he was hearing and he definitely heard when the the piece of glass was pulled out and a nurse exclaimed, “oh my!” Thankfully, the piece of glass didn’t cause any permanent damage, just a few scratches on the lining of his esophagus. He’s not allowed to eat solid foods for a few days, and no alcohol for a week. The doctors concluded that his body knew that something was wrong and caused his loss in appetite knowing that eating could have moved the glass further down his digestive system…. where it probably would have killed him.

We spent some time trying to figure out how the heck he ended up swallowing a shard of glass. It’s not tempered and it’s flat. So it’s not from a bottle or from a car window. Jokes were made about how he needs to keep his mouth closed when he breaks in to someone’s house. It had to be in a drink rather than in food, because a piece that big would have been notiable when chewing food. We decided it must have fallen into a beer glass at his local bar, where it probably went un-noticed when chugging the beer. He’ll definitely pay more attention to his beer now…

We’re all just happy that he’s alright and that someone was looking out for him.

Gracious! the mind boggles! I’m totally gulping. Good thing he went to the doctor. I’m not sure I would have gone so quickly.
