This past Saturday we ventured out to Anaheim to visit with the OC FoodTrux All-Stars again. It seems this group of food trucks gets together each once in a while for brunch and they happened to get together two Saturdays in a row. Just so you know, we don’t plan to visit every weekend. It’s getting expensive since we want to try as much as our stomachs will allow and we really don’t need to be eating this kind of food every week.
Friday night we had a serious downpour but were greeted with sunny skies and lots of those fluffy clouds that make for pretty photos.
You can see Tommy and me on the right.
Our first stop was the Flavor Rush truck and their Menage a Trois of sliders.
These were SO delicious!!! I wish I could eat these for lunch at least once a week for the rest of my life. On the left: Short Rib with grilled onions and aioli. Middle: Pulled pork with cole slaw. Right: Rotisserie Lamb with Tzatziki Sauce. The meat was very tender and flavorful. All three sliders were served on a soft roll that may have been Hawaiian sweet bread. The french fries were tasty with their truffle salt, but they really needed to be cooked longer and were rather floppy.
Next we shared something called a Rolling Ball from the Rolling Sushi Van.
We guessed it was a mixture of raw tuna, sriracha sauce, sesame seeds and krab, rolled into a ball and wrapped with soy paper. We were very hungry so we forgot to take a picture! But it was so tasty that we ordered another one a bit later (and took a photo).
We took a break from the food trucks to warm up (it was very chilly!) and wait for some friends to join us by cruising around Home Depot. Tommy thoroughly enjoyed opening all kinds of cabinets and drawers. He’s not allowed at home!
Once our friends Albert, Jessica and Colin arrived we ordered some more food. Thankfully the weather warmed up a bit and it wasn’t nearly as cold.
We ordered another baked salmon roll from the Rolling Sushi Van because it was so yummy last weekend.
Next Bill and I shared a hot dog from the OC Food Truck.
The hot dog itself was deep fried and topped with bacon, caramelized onions, a little cole slaw, barbecue sauce and cheddar cheese that had been grilled until crispy. This hot dog was ridiculously tasty. I expected one or two of the ingredients to be overpowering, like the barbecue sauce or the bacon. Instead it was a delicious blend of flavors and textures. If it wasn’t destined to shorten my lifespan, I’d order it again. And they garnish every order with a Charms Blow Pop. I can’t remember the last time I ate a Blow Pop, maybe when I was twelve?
The four of us shared the Twinker Bell from the OC Food Truck. It’s a Twinkie that’s dipped in pancake batter and deep fried. Then it’s topped with whipped cream and Nutella. One bite was plenty for me. I thought it was too greasy and overall not as good as I had hoped. Maybe it would be better if the Twinkie didn’t soak up so much grease.
Colin was in a sleepy/pouty mood that day.
Lastly, we had what’s called The Big O from Longboards Ice Cream truck. It was an Oreo cookie ice cream bar dipped in dark chocolate and then dipped in Oreo cookie crumbs. Even though it was still pretty cold outside, the ice cream was very yummy. Jessica had a bar called the OC. It was a strawberry ice cream bar dipped in caramel, then dark chocolate then dipped in waffle cone pieces. I think I want to get that one next time.
It was a really fun day and we have plans to visit the OC Food Trux All-Stars again in mid-March. So stay tuned.
