At long last, I’m so happy to announce that we are expecting! Tommy is going to become a big brother sometime in April of 2014.
He says he’s excited, and randomly wants to start buying things for this new baby, including diapers and clothes. He also wants to help me put the crib together, even though we don’t have a space for it just yet.
And when we ask him if he thinks there is a boy or a girl in my tummy he’s been saying, “Both! A boy AND a girl!” with such enthusiasm, it’s really quite frightening. Thankfully, an ultrasound has confirmed there is, in fact, only one in there.
When he heard the baby’s heartbeat for the first time, he was confused, thinking he was going to hear a baby crying rather than what sounds a lot like a helicopter. My midwife laughed saying that a lot of kids expect to hear a baby cry instead of a heartbeat.
Since then, Tommy often goes back and forth on whether he thinks we’ll have a boy or a girl. More than one mama I’ve known has said their oldest child has guessed correctly the sex of a new baby; something about kids having a sixth sense for these kinds of things. We’ll find out for sure sometime after Thanksgiving.
